I missed half the episode because Mic's and Dian's DVR curse hit me. Both Wednesday night and Friday (during the season finale of Haven) my DVR in my bedroom, froze and when I turned it off then on (HAHA, I'm reminded of Sam in the episode On The Head of A PIn, when we he's on the phone saying, "did you turn it off then on) and when I unplugged it and plugged it back in it would freeze for awhile on the "no signal, aquiring signal, downloading program guide and then the actual station screens. It came back on after Supernatural was over but on Friday night, it kept on coming back and freezing over and over again. So I finally kicked the kids off the living room tv and watched the rest of it down there. So I'm a little behind not being able to watch the entire thing. The satiellite company overnighted me a new box.

Well at least they send the replacements quickly! These receivers must've all been set to 'self-destruct' around now. And they must be nothing to make because I was told I could toss the old one!
Anyway,
As I said elsewhere, the ep was 'eh' to me. I'm tired of Sam/Dean fighting. They aren't even new fights, it's the same crap they've been fighting about for season after season now: someone is lying/not telling everything.
Benny & Amelia: good riddance. I got nothing out of either one of them being in this storyline. I didn't hate Benny, but there was nothing compelling (to me) about his character. Besides, when he falls off the wagon, and we can all see it coming, it gives Dean one more reason to feel guilty...one more reason he doesn't need & frankly, one more reason to rehash and old trope for this show.
I'm not impressed by this season. It's still better than a lot of crap on tv but this season has been blah, and they can't blame it on anything that happened last season because the things that suck about this season, are things that are unrelated. if you're gonna do a relationship, do it right. There's not enough compelling backstory for me to believe Sam & Amelia fell for each other. It was hollow. And she was mean and wishy washy. I know they wanted her to be "messed up" but she didn't seem really attached to anyone, she just seemed flaky. I'm a little tired of heaven being corrupt. I'm no bible-thumper but I am spiritual & I believe everyone's belief's should be respected...I was good with angels being portrayed as warriors but I'm not okay with them coming off as, well...you know the word the boys use. I don't know why they've settle on 'angels suck' but I don't like it. And let's get to the point of what's going on with Cas; I'm over these trips back & forth to heaven to be threatened.
If this goes another season (or two) I'll be really surprised. I'll watch, and I'll hope it gets better, but I'll be surprised.

Didn't watch Wednesday's ep until yesterday. Eh. Too may episodes where the boys are observers, IMO. If the guys are tired from carrying the weight of the show, i still say I'd prefer longer hellatus than I would these episodes where they come off as secondary characters. This episode was about a lot about Charlie & i don't tune in for that.
And too any eps spent trying to appeal to genre fans as opposed to Supernatural fans. I'm not a gamer, I'm not into Dr Who, not into Game of Thrones, LOTR, Harry Potter, etc. I feel like the fan of the show they've forgotten: the kind that likes Supernatural. Somehow all of these genres & fandoms are getting mished in there together and well, not all of us like that. Now we have to prep for yet another time traveler episode next week. Ugh.

SPOILERS for LARP and the Real Girl below:
I liked this last epi, Dean in medieval wear! Boys in suits! Dean hiding his interest in LARPing but getting annoyed and pulling out a "real" gun later LOL. Dean's Braveheart speech at the end in a blonde wig!!! I thought Sam got short shrift a bit in this episode though. Why does Sam dress up less than Dean? However, no jousting or sword fight? Darn.
I like Charlie but I think Dean and she could have been a couple, they are a lot alike. I guess I feel a little bit like they are pushing the gay thing a bit too much for no reason, I am old, I don't see the need!!!
Dian, I think they do a lot of bringing back characters the fandom seems to like, maybe they should do less of that, I don't know. The BIG mistake was killing Bobby so now the boys have no permanent connection to anyone except Cas and no home base (Bobby's house).
At least Grandpa Winchester has the Winchester good looks LOL.
I thought the villain was not "bad" enough, too easy enough for the boys to take care of.
We needed to see Dean eating a giant turkey leg LOL. I am glad the guys had a little fun too.

I don't like Charlie as a Dean mate, gay or not. I'm not sure that they showed they are alike. IMO they showed that they had a common interest or two, but she's not really like Dean. But even if they had, that's not usually an indicator of a good relationship -- in real life or on tv. Another character that I don't get why the fans have fallen so hard for.
I don't mind bringing back characters but it seems that these days, the boys are standing around a lot more, reacting to what other characters are doing, if they're around at all. Having Charlie be the one to save the day made our guys pretty much useless. Writing 101 - you never have your lesser characters have the better lines or do the big things & have your protagonists standing around watching.
Again, because I have no love for tales of faeries/ogres/trolls/elves, D&D, GoT, LOTR, LARPing, etc...there was no inherent appeal. The turkey-leg wouldn't have done anything for me but much like Jensen, I'm over the need to see Dean eating in a general sense.
I didn't hate the episode, which surprised me because I thought I would, but like I said, I think the writers are trying too hard to appeal to that part of the fandom that also like those other things, as opposed to writing for those of us who are just Supernatural fans. The 'supernatural' element in these episodes are always tenuous at best. I think that might be what you felt when you say the villain wasn't 'bad enough'. It's almost like they wanted to cross genres then had to throw a supernatural element in at the end.
Time travel isn't supernatural, it's sci-fi. LARPing, elves, orcs, etc aren't supernatural, they're fantasy. Now & again a movie or tv show may cross my path that I enjoy, but I like it for the show, not the whole genre so I get bored when they invade this show.
I'm not looking forward to yet another time travel episode. The more they do that the more attention they draw to the paradox; these boys have changed too much in the past, so technically the future shouldn't be the same...it's just a mess they shouldn't touch.
They should spend some time rewatching the first 3 seasons. I love character evolution but it really feels that the creative team is moving further and further away from the premise of this show. Where is the shadow man? The Jersey devil? Zombies? Random demon possession? There are a bunch of other lesser known supernatural phenomenon & creatures to explore and instead we've got them going back in time & hanging out with gaming nerds and fighting wizards who control faeries. Stuff like that is a disappointment to me because that's not what I signed on for.
That was ranty, sorry. I just want this show to come back to its roots. I don't want it to stay the same but I do want it to stay on task and not wander off into feeding into fan wank. Enough with the wincesty undertones, enough with the superwholock implications, enough with the meta....just be Supernatural!
I need a sedative lol

I truly think that a lot of SPN fans immediately like these actors/characters because they are on Twitter and other social media and are accessible. I don't tweet all that much and I have had responses from Jim Beaver, Chad Lindberg, DJ Qualls, Demore Barnes, Kim Rhodes and I'm not sure if I recall right, maybe Samantha J Ferris.
Even directors, producers, writers, special effects, makeup, wardrobe, props people are on Twitter and they are even more likely to respond.
Dian I like your post a lot, you should send it to someone at Supernatural.
I have never seen Dr Who, sounds like there are so many years of it, I don't even want to try it. I have a feeling it would not be for me. I saw The Hobbit but have not seen any LOTR movies LOL. It was okay, too long though and need some good looking guys in it (too many homely hobbits).

I'm sure social networking has something to do with how quickly people attach themselves to the stars but solely based on my timeline, many of the people I know are self-proclaimed geeks/nerds...and the geekier/nerdier these celebs prove to be, the more they are fallen for.
I don't know if either Amelia or Benny will come back for a future purpose (I kinda feel like Benny will, to either put Dean in the position of killing him or having Dean & Sam fight again because Sam killed him) but if they don't then the the reason for them having been o the show at all seems thin. Not that I want to see them again, but it's really bad writing to spend time poorly introducing characters especially if they wind up being inconsequential. And there's nothing about either that felt substantial to me.
Tonight is a new episode. Crossing my fingers that I will at least, not hate this.
These last few seasons are making me wish I had the first few on DVD lol.

Michele, I really liked how Grandpa Winchester "arrived" in the first half of the episode.
I would love some Winchester men to pop out of my closet!!!
Well I guess Henry W had to either go back or die but the poor guys can't catch a break with a relative!!! I wonder what ever happened to Grandma Winchester LOL. That is why I wish they had kept Bobby (stupid Sera)!!!
More later when I catch up here!

I agree with the stupid Sera remark. I liked the episode but I wish and/or hope they would do more with whole Grandpa Winchester's being a legacy in order to tie it in better with the boys being hunters. It just seems with this magic legacy thing being just a one off episode is a little left field for me. Why bring it up all of the sudden in one episode if they are going to let it drop with "well grandpa died and took the legacy info with him"? I think it would be better if they spent some more time showing the boys learning more about it and more about their father's family, like what happened to his mother..
