I was more surprised (at the time) about the revelation about The Campbells than I was about this Winchester surprise. It was such a great mislead to have John have been the one that hadn't always been into hunting. I feel like making The Winchester side some special entities seems thrown together. Just because the angels said the union was a big deal doesn't mean both people had to be extraordinary. The story is far more compelling -- to me -- as we knew it before this episode: ordinary guy gets into the extraordinary to avenge the death of his wife, who was actually the extraordinary one. Now we're being told The Winchesters were basically 'watchers'....a term from Buffy & Highlander, the only term I can think of that would be comparable to what Henry described. Rough & tumble, blue collar John came from this guy so prim and proper that he almost affected British mannerisms & elocution? People in the fifties didn't talk like that just because they wore suits. Henry sounded like an alien or like he was from medieval times.
Part of me will be glad if they don't revisit this because it seemed like an unnecessary move. But it would make the writers truly lame at their craft if this isn't something they're going to expand on.
I think Jim should consider himself lucky to not be part of this season (so far). I know we're still early on but this season has been all over the place. If that's gonna happen, they should go back to MotW.

I forgot to add this episode.
Okayyyyy....I'm torn about this episode. It was unique. It was supernatural.
But part of me was uncomfortable with the Hitler/Jews-Golem theme. More than I was with the angels. I'm not Jewish, so I don't know why. I enjoyed seeing Hal Linden...I don't think I'd seen him since Barney Miller. But there was a definite feeling of unease for me watching this. Maybe it was allusion to the Holocaust, maybe it was the way the dude was speaking to the Golem (I don't really like the irreverent/disrespectful way the spiritual creatures get spoken to on this show).
I didn't hate this episode.
I still feel an eyeroll deep in my soul about this Men of Letters business. It's hard for me to believe that John never encountered his family to know he had a background in the supernatural. His wife was killed by a demon...he did a book-full of research in which he eventually found out about his own son's destiny...he never found any info that alluded to his own family, that they were people of magic & spells & chronicling the supernatural and hunters? His dad died, did his mom not know her husband did this? Was there no uncle or grandfather that came around while he was growing up? There are dots that need connecting and I don't think they can.
I'm bothered that the best compliment I can give a favorite show is that 'I didn't hate it'.

I imagine most have heard the news but it bears repeating here:
This is good news for our cast & crew as well as the fandom.
I won't be hypocritical; I've had my issues with this season and last BUT as I say, a bad Supernatural is better than most of what's on tv. The longer they stay on, the less room for another 'reality' tv show or a OTH-type.
So how is everyone feeling about this: has the show overstayed its welcome, is it it time to retire with dignity, should the 9th be the last season, what do you hope you'll see (or won't see) in this season to come?

Hi, ninja posting! I am so happy they renewed Supernatural early, it helps me enjoy the current season without worry! I am all for them going more seasons, I don’t want it to end; it is not perfect but I love it and it is hard to top the first 5 years anyway. This could be the only time J2 will work together too. I will miss the characters and our Supernatural world when it is over.
We might not see the actors as much either, Jensen may go more into directing down the road.
I think they will try to do 10 seasons like Smallville if they can.
I also enjoy my little role in the best fandom ever! ;D

I liked Everybody Hates Hitler, I didn’t like the attitude of the young guy with the Golem, he smoked his Grandfather’s book or whatever!!! Even if he thought it was all crazy, that is something I would keep, I get very attached to things especially something that can’t be replaced. I thought Sam looked disgusted with him about that, he and Dean value John’s journal so much plus all the lost information they could have used!!!
I didn’t recognize Hal Linden until people tweeted about him; hadn’t heard about him guest starring. I guess I am getting good at avoiding some spoilers.
I think they are doing this Men of Letters thing in part to give Sam something more intellectual to do and research and they gave them the bunker so they would have a home. I think Dean is hoping Sam will be happy with his new research etc., Dean has always wanted Sam to stay with him.
I’m not sure why John didn’t know about any of this, maybe they will address it. Didn’t they mention an uncle way back in S1 or S2, not sure which side of the family or whether he was alive or dead?
I need to watch again, SPN hour goes by so fast, I am sure I missed things, I was a tad bit uncomfortable with the same thing you were Dian.
Misha, Jensen and Clif watched it together (I guess on set); Misha tweeted that it was very brave of SPN to go out on a limb and condemn Nazis LOL.

I'm gonna go watch the 1st half hour of the epi from 3 weeks ago right now. I never watched it and I feel like I'm missing something. I have to watch the new epi from tonight too.

I LOVED last night's episode It felt familiar yet not redundant. I cared about what was going on. I didn't feel like the boys were guests on their own show. They had a brother moment instead of making them feel like an old married couple (which I feel they do a lot in recent years) I knew they had it in them! I'm so happy. I hope this continues through season 9.
